PAST MEMORiES

REVIEW OF 2022/2023

The past few years have been very challenging indeed. We have seen the Coronavirus pandemic sweep the world. This of course has curtailed our fishing and travel, both internal and international was severely restricted. In 2020 we managed two trips only when internal travel restrictions eased somewhat. One was in June and produced 20 sailfish for one boat over a two day period and a 110kg black marlin. The September trip 81 sails were landed for two boats over a two day period.

Around late September a La Nina phase slowly began and by the end of the year it was full blown. But it was not a normal La Nina. It lasted from November 2020 to January 2023, a triple whammy. This is the first time this has happened for over 50 years.

2021 was a dead year for us. We managed a few local trips but the results were less than satisfactory. We also managed a few trips in the 2nd half of 2022 but the result s were pretty much the same.

However, in January 2023, NOAA reported an easing of La Nina and current predictions are for a neutral situation by mid 2023, with a possibility of an El Nino by the end of the year. La Nina is not great for our fishing for sails in Rompin. A neutral phase and an El Nino means much improved fishing. So we are looking forward to a couple of bumper years to come.
